Green Technology Alliance (GTA) COO Selected To Return as a SBIR Phase I Commercial Reviewer for the National Science Foundation.

Green Technology Alliance (GTA) founder and COO, Heath P. Naquin, has been selected as a commercial reviewer for a Phase I Small Business Innovation and Research (SBIR) panel with the National Science Foundation (NSF). The panel will be held on March 10th with a focus on Engineered Materials.

The panel will draw commercialization and subject matter experts from across the country to review proposals for technical accuracy and economic viability. Approved proposals will be awarded research and limited operational funds targeted at helping small businesses develop cutting edge, innovative technologies with a focus on commercialization. Commercial Review is an important part of the SBIR process ensuring that tax dollars are wisely invested in technologies that have significant potential for commercial viability.

We are excited and honored to have Heath return and serve as a commercial reviewer for the NSF, Michelle Naquin, Green Technology Alliance, Chief Executive Officer. “Programs like the NSF SBIR Grant program help ensure that start-up businesses are able to get the funding they need to complete critical research into their technologies on the path to commercialization. This panel is especially important because so many green/clean technologies work with a number of engineered materials.

Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Program

The Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) Program at the NSF is designed to support innovation among our nation’s small businesses (less than 500 employees). The NSF SBIR/STTR Program supports innovation in seven broad topic areas: Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Processes, Biotechnology, Chemical-Based Technologies, Electronics, Environmental Technology, Emerging Opportunities, and Information Technology.

The SBIR/STTR Program at NSF is divided into three phases: Phase I grantees receive up to $100,000 for a 6-month (SBIR) or 12-month (STTR) feasibility or proof of concept project. Phase II support is available for successful Phase I performers up to $500,000 for a 24-month concept refinement/ prototype development.

To be eligible for SBIR consideration a company must qualify as a small business (according to the federal government) and must submit a detailed application to the NSF during one of three submission windows.

Reed M. Benet has spent over a decade founding, funding, consulting to, or leading venture capital backed start-ups in cleantech, high-tech, and the life sciences. He is the co-inventor on four patents, an in-licensor of university technologies into his start-ups, and the out-licensor of these technologies to major corporate partners. His first venture capital backed start-up was sold to Eastman Chemical. His educational path includes an ongoing A.B.D. Ph.D. in the College of Engineering at the University of California Davis — with a focus on alternative fuels, vehicles and energy– an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and an A.B. from Princeton University.

Green Technology Alliance (GTA) founder Heath Naquin has been selected as a commercialization instructor for the international University Technology Enterprise Network (UTEN) commercialization training program for international interns. Senior staff members from 6 leading tech transfer units in Portugal will arrive and receive training in several different aspects of commercialization ranging from analysis, market research networks, incubation techniques, funding strategies and IP protection.

We are excited and honored to have Heath serve as a commercialization instructor for the International UTEN Commercialization Project. Green Technology Alliance (GTA) Founder, Heath P. Naquin, Chosen as Instructor for IC² Training Programs for Commercialization Managers, Entrepreneurs and Technologists.

The pilot project, headed by the University of Texas Global Commercialization Group (GCG) and funded in part by the US Department of State, is designed to provide Egyptian Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) managers with best practices in commercialization. Instruction will be provided in different aspects of commercialization ranging from analysis, market research networks, incubation techniques, funding strategies and IP protection.

We are excited and honored to have Heath serve as a commercialization instructor for the Egyptian Science and Technology Development Fund. International collaboration centered on innovation is critical to increasing the adoption of green technologies. — Michelle Naquin, Green Technology Alliance, Chief Executive Officer.

In the initial phase of the Egyptian project, 45 technologies were analyzed to determine those that had the most commercialization potential. Submitted technologies covered a range of industries including the medical, agricultural, material science and environmental fields. The top 10 technologies have been sent for analysis by commercialization experts in the United States. Heath will be working in tandem with STDF managers on several commercialization reports helping STDF managers determine the potential strengths and weaknesses of technologies in their portfolio as they relate to the US Market.

The 10 finalists will make their presentations to a panel of three international judges in Cairo, Egypt on November 23 ‐ 24. The four technologies judged to have the highest potential for successful international commercialization will be awarded a minimum of USD$15K each by the STDF, as well as ongoing support and training to help bring the technologies to market.

What exactly is a “Green Data Center” and how do you get one?

Any organization with a server, email and the need to store data is a datacenter…

The fact is that datacenters consume an incredible amount of power, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, data centers alone in 2000 used an estimated 12 billion kilowatt hours of electrical power which more than doubled to 23 billion in 2005. That rapid and accelerating power consumption means even a small change could have a huge impact.

The energy consumption of servers and data centers has doubled in the past five years and is expected to almost double again in the next five years, to more than 100 billion kWh, costing about $7.4 billion annually. Existing green IT technologies and strategies could reduce typical server energy use by an estimated 25%, with even greater energy savings possible with advanced technologies.

So what can you do?

Optimize your systems and storage.

Data is at the heart of the datacenter. There are new technologies and systems that not only cost less but are multiple factors more efficient. Additionally, you can reduce archaic and redundant information or software that’s only needed some of the time if at all for a huge impact. How can outsourcing provide a solution for archival information. From consolidation to power management to redesign of the floor plan there are many opportunities to green your datacenter. Our panel of industry experts will offer best practices that can help you make over your datacenter and go from red to green.

The GTA hosted a full conference track dedicated to Green IT including a Green IT Pavilion in the InnoTech Austin exhibit area.

Industry experts from across the Green IT spectrum from world class organizations including, Aperio Marketing, Applied Materials, Austin Energy, Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy, ClearCube, Chatsworth Products, Green Planet Energy, IBM, Rackspace, Sun Microsystems, and TechTurn presented on a variety of Green IT topics. The conference program included sessions and panels on greening the datacenter, supporting emerging green technologies, best practices in Green IT evaluation and implementation as well as the first steps in greening your organizations operations.

Dr. Webber opened the day long event with a standing room only opening session on the “economic state of the environment.” He engaged the audience in a rousing discussion on the connections between energy and the economy, and the critical energy technologies of the future that be brought online to solve the problem without upending the economy. The sessions continued with case studies and rousing panel debates on the best approaches for an organization going green. Virtualization was of course discussed but it became clear that the best benefit for green from virtualization is the ability to more effectively track and monitor usage and energy consumption. This and many other valuable insights from the day long series of events kept many in their seat long after the sessions ended.

InnoTech Austin is a one day focused event where education, innovation, peer-to-peer networking and the latest technology and business solutions are all available specifically for IT professionals.
