GTA contracted by EPA to provide grant proposal review services for the EPA’s SBIR program. As part of that contract commercialization review services will be provided on green building technologies. These are the next generation technologies that will change the way we all work, live and go about our daily lives.

With our new role supporting the NSF with their SBIR program, the GTA continues to provide expertise to an ever growing network of organizations, businesses and emerging technology firms. We will continue to provide front line assistance in evaluating market opportunities and commercialization positioning for organizations across the green, clean and sustainability sectors. Our comprehensive services help us connect those with needs with those that offer a solution, thereby accelerating the timeline of adoption for innovation and helping develop the technologies that will succeed in today’s globalized economy. — Michelle Naquin, Green Technology Alliance, Chief Executive Officer.

EPA SBIR Program

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is one of 11 federal agencies that participates in the SBIR Program established by the Small Business Innovation Development Act of 1982. The purpose of this Act was to strengthen the role of small businesses in federally funded R&D and help develop a stronger national base for technical innovation. An SBIR small business is defined as a for-profit organization with no more than 500 employees. In addition, the small business must be independently owned and operated, at least 51 percent owned by U.S. citizens or lawfully admitted resident aliens, not dominant in the field of operation in which it is proposing, and have its principal place of business in the United States. Joint ventures and limited partnerships are eligible for SBIR awards, provided the entity created qualifies as a small business.

EPA issues annual solicitations for Phase I and Phase II research proposals from science and technology-based firms. Under Phase I, the scientific merit and technical feasibility of the proposed concept is investigated. EPA awards firm-fixed-price Phase I contracts of up to $70,000 for 6 months. Through this phased approach to SBIR funding, EPA can determine whether the research idea, often on high-risk advanced concepts, is technically feasible, whether the firm can do high-quality research, and whether sufficient progress has been made to justify a larger Phase II effort.

Phase II contracts are limited to small businesses that have successfully completed their Phase I contracts. The objective of Phase II is to develop and commercialize the Phase I technology. Competitive awards are based on the results of Phase I and the commercialization potential of the Phase II technology. In Phase II, EPA awards contracts of up to $225,000 for two years. EPA also offers up to $120,000 and one additional year as Phase II Options for firms with third party financing for accelerating commercialization or for technologies accepted into an EPA technology verification program.

If you or your organization would like to learn more about SBIR/STTR programs, feel free to contact us at partner@greentechnologyalliance.org. Let us know how we can support you.

This special event is Platinum Sponsored by Hitachi Data Systems. Microsoft and the Green Technology Alliance (GTA) are proud to co-host this special GTA Green IT mini-conference. Green positively impacts the bottom line when the focus is on efficiency. The reality is that regardless of the reason we all have to do more with less. But how do you do that without knowledge sharing?

The answer is you can’t, so the GTA is organizing our first Ecologic Dialogue™ event. Whether you have been to one our events or haven’t been able to make it before this is a CAN NOT miss opportunity. (Ecologic Dialogue is our model for facilitated knowledge sharing.)

When Can Green Positively Impact Your Bottom Line?

A FREE GTA special event dedicated to The Positive Economics of Efficiency Innovations.

Platinum sponsored by Hitachi Data Systems.

Hosted by the GTA and Microsoft

GTA is hosting our first Ecologic DialogueTM event. Ecologic Dialogue is our model for facilitated knowledge sharing based on systems theory. Ecologic Dialogue is one of our organization’s key guiding principles. The principle that we are all part of the solution, ANY SOLUTION. The principle that we each hold a piece of the whole. These pieces of knowledge we hold can only increase human development when we come together to share what we know and understand with others. This isn’t an esoteric idea to create a method for talking about the topic of green, ecology or even systems theory.

Ecologic Dialogue is about bringing people together that need to see value and results from their green initiatives, internal or external, and helping all of us find better more efficient ways to make decisions, operate our businesses and build our economy with a REAL foundation.

This special event is headed by a keynote from an industry leader committed to green from the inside out– Hitachi Data Systems. The keynote will be followed by a series of diverse conversations facilitated via expert moderated open discussion. This unique event will be based on YOU; ensuring that your needs, questions and concerns are addressed by a range of experts across the green industry. Two focused sessions will cover 1) developing green organizational infrastructures and 2) implementing green solutions, technologies and processes. Learn about the technologies and tools that will help you develop a Green strategy that delivers real business value.

This special Ecologic Dialogue GTA event will bring back by popular demand… Mr. Dean Campbell. Mr. Campbell will present a HDS Special Keynote: Hitachi Data Systems a Case Study in Alignment: Building Green Storage Economics in Trying Times. Mr. Campbell will focus on solutions that Deliver Value, Efficiency and ROI. When it comes to accommodating the rapid growth of management, storage, and archiving of data, environmental issues are now everyone’s concern as organizations of all sizes struggle to keep pace in matching their storage needs with business requirements.

The Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) three-fold strategy for achieving their goals is: designing, manufacturing, and supporting environmentally-friendly storage infrastructures throughout their entire life cycle—including end-of-life disposal. Excerpt from HDS whitepaper… The popular calling to ‘do more with less’ has been leading IT users to prioritize infrastructure purchases based on cost containment for some time; now, however, the call is more urgent and requires more imagination. Greening Innovation…Innovating Green

The green industry regardless of sector requires innovation and entrepreneurship strategies focused on viable commercialization opportunities. Microsoft and the Green Technology Alliance (GTA) are proud to sponsor this special innovation and entrepreneurship mini-conference.

Accelerating Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Opportunity

One technology may have many opportunities to develop funding, deliver a product and go to market. Different markets present different opportunities and that is the key to success according to global innovation expert, Heath Naquin, co-founder and COO of the GTA. The complexity of today’s global marketplace means that there is more opportunity than ever before but channeling that opportunity into viability is key.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to see Heath’s popular session, Evaluation, Validation and Opportunity: Strategies For Discovering The Real Value For Your Customers And Partners. This GTA I&E mini-conference will provide a strategic overview of the three key integrated aspects of driving an innovation to market.

The key is to access the viability of an innovation relative to the market. Sounds straightforward, but how do you access the true market viability of a technology? Through an integrated approach that addresses the three interdependent areas of technology commercialization. This special GTA event will offer more than just theory it will focus on real programs and opportunities to validate and effectively commercialize new technologies.

Microsoft, IBM and the Green Technology Alliance (GTA) are proud to co-sponsor this special GTA Green IT mini-conference. Sessions include an overview of the value of optimizing your datacenter, greening your IT infrastructure, case studies in optimized datacenters, and real world strategies for going green… from you!

What exactly is a “Green Data Center” and how do you get one?

Any organization with a server, email and the need to store data is a datacenter…

The fact is that datacenters consume an incredible amount of power, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, data centers alone in 2000 used an estimated 12 billion kilowatt hours of electrical power which more than doubled to 23 billion in 2005. That rapid and accelerating power consumption means even a small change could have a huge impact.

The energy consumption of servers and data centers has doubled in the past five years and is expected to almost double again in the next five years, to more than 100 billion kWh, costing about $7.4 billion annually. Existing green IT technologies and strategies could reduce typical server energy use by an estimated 25%, with even greater energy savings possible with advanced technologies.

    So what can you do?

    Optimize your systems and storage.

Data is at the heart of the datacenter. There are new technologies and systems that not only cost less but are multiple factors more efficient. Additionally, you can reduce archaic and redundant information or software that’s only needed some of the time if at all for a huge impact. How can outsourcing provide a solution for archival information. From consolidation to power management to redesign of the floor plan there are many opportunities to green your datacenter. Our panel of industry experts will offer best practices that can help you make over your datacenter and go from red to green.

    • Do blade servers and virtualization really save money?
    • What other technologies are on the horizon that can potentially help save space, power and cooling?
    • What can we do if we can’t start from scratch with a new facility?
    • Is outsourcing still a viable model, or are they facing the same issues?
    • Does it make sense to consolidate multiple datacenters into one?

Gartner estimates that power and cooling costs are upwards of 40% of an IT departments operating budget, and that 85% of datacenters are currently running out of power and/or space.

    Special Event Notice:
Over the last several months and as a result of all the great solutions and knowledge out there we have learned about we have decided to open up this mini-conference to YOU! For the first time in a GTA event we are including in our conference a round table discussion! The topic… A Solutions Round Table: Green Technologies and Processes That Deliver Value.

The GTA hosted a full conference track dedicated to Green IT including a Green IT Pavilion in the InnoTech Austin exhibit area.

Industry experts from across the Green IT spectrum from world class organizations including, Aperio Marketing, Applied Materials, Austin Energy, Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy, ClearCube, Chatsworth Products, Green Planet Energy, IBM, Rackspace, Sun Microsystems, and TechTurn presented on a variety of Green IT topics. The conference program included sessions and panels on greening the datacenter, supporting emerging green technologies, best practices in Green IT evaluation and implementation as well as the first steps in greening your organizations operations.

Dr. Webber opened the day long event with a standing room only opening session on the “economic state of the environment.” He engaged the audience in a rousing discussion on the connections between energy and the economy, and the critical energy technologies of the future that be brought online to solve the problem without upending the economy. The sessions continued with case studies and rousing panel debates on the best approaches for an organization going green. Virtualization was of course discussed but it became clear that the best benefit for green from virtualization is the ability to more effectively track and monitor usage and energy consumption. This and many other valuable insights from the day long series of events kept many in their seat long after the sessions ended.

InnoTech Austin is a one day focused event where education, innovation, peer-to-peer networking and the latest technology and business solutions are all available specifically for IT professionals. The fourth annual Austin InnoTech assembled the leading business and technology executives in the region for a day of answers to IT issues, real world case studies and is the best chance to see the latest products and solutions that support your business.

Green is a hot topic and a strategic area for all IT organizations and InnoTech Austin is proud to partner with the GTA, an organization at the forefront of innovation in the Green IT space, to help create and support our first dedicated Green IT conference track and Green IT pavilion at the InnoTech conference. — Sean Lowery, Executive Director, Prospera Events.

Microsoft and the Green Technology Alliance (GTA) are proud to co-sponsor this special event. Learn the current trends in green positioning, branding, consulting and sales to help you better position your company. You will also learn how to apply these trends when creating your market proposition and value so that you can build a strong customer base.

Special workshop sessions will help you learn how to create a customized marketing and integrated customer development program that helps you build “gold customers” and “bridge the credibility gap.”

Session One: Bridging the Credibility Gap: Collaborative Strategies to Deliver Real Value for Your Customers and Partners

While the marketplace seems to be asking for more earth-friendly products, all too often, claims of “green” and “eco-friendly” are dismissed as marketing puffery or are perceived as too experimental (or too expensive) to effectively do the job. And despite the need for green offerings, the customer frequently cites “price” as the biggest determining factor in the decision process. But if you lower prices to stimulate sales, your profits shrink. In essence, your client doesn’t trust that you will be able to deliver on the promise in your sales pitch.

Of course, you can try and hammer home your point through negotiation. Yet, usually the seller will lose; and almost always result in a discounted price. However, there is another path: bridge the credibility gap by communicating a real value.

Join us for this session to learn how to get your clients to understand and believe in the superior value of your offerings. You will learn how to communicate a compelling customer value proposition and explain how your offerings outmatch your rivals on points that matter most to your customer.
