The Green Technology Alliance (GTA) and Microsoft have partnered together to demonstrate value in sustainable technologies and business practices for all size organizations. Microsoft’s new BizSpark program is another way for the GTA to support startups that are interested in developing a sustainable organization. Startups are the lifeblood of innovation and economic development, the GTA provides the unique resources startups require to adopt the most efficient business practices and help accelerate the development of new technologies by identifying market opportunities and channels. Microsoft’s partner programs are an important tool in the GTA’s commercialization programs.

BizSpark is a uniquely designed Microsoft partner program focused on accelerating a start-ups success by providing fast, affordable access to current, full-featured Microsoft tools and technologies, plus production licensing for hosted solutions. For support, BizSpark unites a global community of technology and entrepreneurial experts who can guide startups through the hurdles of growing a new business. This unique community offers opportunity for both start-ups and business partners to help support the accelerated success of new technologies.

To be eligible for the Microsoft BizSpark Program, startups must be actively engaged in development of a software-based product or service with additional benefits for companies developing hosted Software As A Service (SAAS) products, startups must also have been in business less than three years, and have less than USD$1M in revenue. Startups may enroll for the program by obtaining sponsorship from a designated BizSpark Network partner.

Special Guest: The GTA is proud to welcome Reed Benet the new Director of the Clean Energy Division, Austin Technology Incubator (ATI).Mr. Benet will present a unique and valuable perspective on the conference topics and provide an overview of the vision and future direction the ATI Clean Energy group will take.

Reed M. Benet has spent over a decade founding, funding, consulting to, or leading venture capital backed start-ups in cleantech, high-tech, and the life sciences. He is the co-inventor on four patents, an in-licensor of university technologies into his start-ups, and the out-licensor of these technologies to major corporate partners. His first venture capital backed start-up was sold to Eastman Chemical. His educational path includes an ongoing A.B.D. Ph.D. in the College of Engineering at the University of California Davis — with a focus on alternative fuels, vehicles and energy– an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, and an A.B. from Princeton University.

    Microsoft, IBM and the Green Technology Alliance (GTA) are proud to co-sponsor this special GTA Green IT mini-conference. Sessions include an overview of the value of optimizing your datacenter, greening your IT infrastructure, case studies in optimized datacenters, and real world strategies for going green… from you!

    What exactly is a “Green Data Center” and how do you get one?

    Any organization with a server, email and the need to store data is a datacenter…

    The fact is that datacenters consume an incredible amount of power, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, data centers alone in 2000 used an estimated 12 billion kilowatt hours of electrical power which more than doubled to 23 billion in 2005. That rapid and accelerating power consumption means even a small change could have a huge impact.

    The energy consumption of servers and data centers has doubled in the past five years and is expected to almost double again in the next five years, to more than 100 billion kWh, costing about $7.4 billion annually. Existing green IT technologies and strategies could reduce typical server energy use by an estimated 25%, with even greater energy savings possible with advanced technologies.

    So what can you do?

    Optimize your systems and storage.

    Data is at the heart of the datacenter. There are new technologies and systems that not only cost less but are multiple factors more efficient. Additionally, you can reduce archaic and redundant information or software that’s only needed some of the time if at all for a huge impact. How can outsourcing provide a solution for archival information. From consolidation to power management to redesign of the floor plan there are many opportunities to green your datacenter. Our panel of industry experts will offer best practices that can help you make over your datacenter and go from red to green.

    • Do blade servers and virtualization really save money?
    • What other technologies are on the horizon that can potentially help save space, power and cooling?
    • What can we do if we can’t start from scratch with a new facility?

    Gartner estimates that power and cooling costs are upwards of 40% of an IT departments operating budget, and that 85% of datacenters are currently running out of power and/or space.
